Claire Angelique – SA’s finest
Posted in: UncategorizedI’m am a little annoyed about a story I was just sent that was printed in a Durban newspaper, covering a punk show that took place at the Burn night club a few weeks back. I’m not planning on writing a long winded pile of
rubbish to knock out the weak bits of her article and waste my own time, but I do feel that that the sort of crap she regurgitated onto her keyboard to come off as a smart modern journalist and to boost her name as a quirky and controversial creative is a disgrace. Claire Angelique’s comments on the performance of one of Johannesburg’s local punk rock bands as being racist and fascist completely shocked me, as it seems the closer you edge to the age of 30 the more your brain atrophies until there is almost nothing to speak of.
She is an award winning journalist and I have read that she is currently working on a film in the role of director, and so I would think that having grown up in an environment of creativity, often fueled by different types of anger, sadness, happiness and discontent she would have a little more respect for herself in writing something so completely all-emcompassingly retarded in an attempt to sell a couple extra copies of a paper to old people, I am giving you this opportunity, Claire, to come forth and apologise for polluting our minds with your unending stupidity, and for the low low crime of attempting to sell papers by linking a political party and the colour of a human beings skin, I quote “two black kid from a local band sheepishly left the mosh pit”, this was after the band The Mean
Streets spat some venom at our ruling government party, Julias Malema, the embarrassing leader of the ANC Youth League, and Jacob Zuma.
Claire, we understand that this must have been a bit of a hard month for you, but stooping this low to gun down a couple of drunk guys looking for a party and saying what they think is no excuse to try and fill your pockets with a bit more chump change.
If “our generation needs a voice” so badly I am inviting you to be that, and not to expect a punk band to deliver a higher level of social responsibility than you can as the esteemed journalist you have been made out to be. “Our generation”, is not you, you are now an old woman who has made the terrible mistake of choosing subject matter that will only hurt her image later, and boost the

publicity of the band, leaving you a lucrative and fulfilling career path as the 702 Talk radio tea lady, giving back scratches to Jenny Crwys-Williams during ad breaks while she reduces you to something even more shameful and boring than you have already become. I have heard of another article you excreted covering your idea of the “Point of hardcore” which I absolutely cannot wait to begin reading before stopping and using as bog roll.
If I could ask you one favour, please stay out of the places that play music you don’t like, and if for some reason you do find yourself straying from the garden of uselessness and shame from where you draw your unholy powers, leave your bad bad attitude and your pen at home, because negative feedback is the last thing needed in a scene already battling to survive. And remember the golden rule: YOU DON”T HAVE TO LISTEN TO IT.

GIGGLE
oh lordie, another spoilt white boy rant, and by the by i stopped listening to it…
Ah, Claire, thank you so much for stopping by to amuse us.
claire claire claire, Perhpas the owner of this site should lay a few racism charges on you… for your ”white boy” comment. You see the Mean Streets have a song about the ANC called the ANC… and in no way is it racist for you see it is all about how corrupt they are… hence the name AFRICAN NATIONAL CRIMINALS…Please do explain how that is racist…guess your ears are a tad old to hear the words… and saying F*** Zuma and F*** the ANC is by no means racist my girl… for example if i say f*** you Claire am i a racist.
so miss music critic if you know anything about music you’ll remember how Nixons office was under attack from many many artists way back when… tell me Claire were nirvana R.E.M and Black Flag also racist for saying F*** our government?
sure babes, anytime, as long as my newspaper like gets spans of papers sold all because of the music column, viva the revolution and all that
oh so zuma is nixon now? come on
Point is it’s a bad article, very sensationalized. I think you know.
no no nixon finished primary school
touche
its not sensationalised the feedback i’ve had has been good, extremely good, to be honest i knew i was treading holy ground when i wrote it and i have been part of this scene for a long time and always supported it the thing is that there is an aggressive elitist element to it, and i stand by what i wrote, you guys might not realise it but a lot of indian and black kids who are into rock and punk feel very alienated by your comments and attitudes, just deal with the crit and move on, i’m not a sensationalist in any way i’m all for good music, which in the article i did mention the mean streets played but the interjection was uncalled for especially in the current climate…peace and power/
I can understand where you’re coming from, but it wasn’t put across that way, the fact that you thought they have an aggressive elitist attitude is not what came out in the article, you used racist and fascist, because nobody would have been interested if the article came out like this:
-I think The Mean Streets kind of had an aggressive elitist attitude, they directed harsh comments at some of South Africa’s very controversial leaders, everyone except for me enjoyed the show.-
I really think you have accused people of being a racist unfairly, which is something we much less need in our current political climate, there are too many people pulling that card to get noticed and I think it’s a shame to see it filter down to this level, especially in the alternative community.
you say tomatoe i say tomaeto, sorry bro, thats the way it appeared and not just to me fellow music journalists who accompanied me and had been in the game and the struggle a lot longer were all shocked at the aggressiveness, a music column is personal commentary and that was mine. i now retire from the subject, words are powerful use them wisely and face up to the consequences thereafter
i have to agree with matthew. How can you call a group like this racist for directing sentiment at political figures and not at a particular race group. if they had spat hatred at George Bush would you consider them racist then? i think not. listen to the words to the song please, infact could someone post them. secondly I AM GROSSLY INSULTED BY YOUR STATEMENT: “ANOTHER SPOILT WHITE BOY RANT” YOU ARE MAKING THIS A RACE ISSUE. just because you may be white yoursef (im not sure) does not make you exempt from critisism for statements like this. i am offended and your comment is truly disgracefull.
just for the record i do not share the sentiment of hatred towards julius, jacob or the ANC, please dont assume that just because i am a “spoilt white boy”.
And punk music, I think more than other genres, is social commentary and always has been, I’ve sat on the fence when it came to my opinion of journalists, but I must honestly say this has affirmed for me that the majority are shallow idiots with only the skill of using language to make them look smart, but have very little substance. I’ll ask you please not to mention your fellow journalists in your argument, as I imagine a 40 year old who gets a nose bleed when his Lionel Richie LP is played too loud has no place at a punk show. No one commenting here is part of the band, and this is a criticism of your work, so please, accept the crit and move on. Topic over, I have other old wheelbarrows to mend.
